May 2, 2018

2018 NCAA Singles Championship

COLUMBIA, S.C. — No. 33 Hadley Berg of South Carolina women’s tennis was selected to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships, it was announced Wednesday.

The Singles Championships will take place on May 23-28 in Winston-Salem, N.C. at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex after the conclusion of the NCAA Team Tournament.

No. 60 Ingrid Gamarra Martins was named as a fourth alternate, meaning she will be eligible to play if there are four players who can’t participate or opt out of the Singles Championship.

This marks Berg’s first appearance in the Singles Championships and the Gamecocks’ fourth straight season with a player in the tournament.

The senior is the highest-ranked singles player on the team at No. 33, peaking at a career-high No. 29 from March 6-13. Berg has spent 16 straight weeks ranked inside the Top 50. She finished the dual match season with an 11-6 record, including a 7-3 record in SEC play. The Greenbrae, California native solely played in the top half of the lineup this season, holding a 4-0 record at No. 1, 6-4 record at No. 2 and 1-2 record at No. 3. She also clinched two dual matches for the Gamecocks.

Berg’s 23-7 singles record this season has her at 97-34 overall, three wins shy of 100 on her career, with a winning percentage of .740 that ranks seventh in school history. She is looking to become just the fourth player in school history with 100 wins.

Berg’s highest-ranked win of the season came at No. 7 Ole Miss on March 3. The senior Berg defeated No. 16 and SEC Player of the Year Arianne Hartono in straight sets. She also garnered ranked wins against Georgia’s No. 59 Kennedy Shaffer and Vanderbilt’s No. 50 Christina Rosca.

If one were to count the individual and team tournaments, South Carolina has participated in at least one NCAA event every year since 1990, a streak of 29 appearances in a row.
