Gamecocks Wrap Season With Seven Combined Rankings

ITA Final Singles & Doubles Rankings

COLUMBIA, S.C. — No. 12 South Carolina women’s tennis finished the 2017-18 season with a combined seven nationally-ranked singles players and doubles tandems.

Three Gamecocks finished the year in the Top 125 singles rankings, while four doubles tandems were ranked in the Top 90. Seven combined final singles and doubles rankings are the most for the Gamecocks in program history. Previously, the team’s highest combined total was five in the 2001-02 season and 1986-87 season.

In singles, Hadley Berg earned the highest ranking at No. 34, followed by No. 68 Ingrid Gamarra Martins and No. 115 Megan Davies. Berg’s ranking at No. 34 marks the highest final singles ranking for the Gamecocks since 2009 when Gira Schofield finished the year ranked at No. 33. Her ranking is the 10th highest in program history behind Schofield (No. 33 in 2009), Katarina Markovski (No. 33 in 1999), Heather Greene (No. 33 in 1995), Lauren Bernstein (No. 30 in 1982), Markovski (No. 29 in 2000), Carolina Kulik (Tied for No. 26 in 1987), Ellen Oxreider (No. 23 in 1983), Johnna Chafin (No. 22 in 1984) and Bernstein (No. 15 in 1983).

Berg finished the dual match campaign with a 13-6 singles record, playing solely in the top half of the lineup for her senior campaign. Along with garnering her first career All-SEC First-Team selection, Berg went 4-0 at No. 1 singles and defeated four ranked opponents in the dual match season. She wrapped her career at 99-34 overall, one win shy of 100 on her career, with a winning percentage of .744 that ranks seventh in school history.

Gamarra Martins finished the year with a 17-8 overall record and an 11-5 record in dual match play. Similar to Berg, Gammara Martins received an All-SEC First Team selection and played solely in the top half of the singles lineup.

In her first season as a Gamecock, Davies earned a team-high 29 overall wins and a team-high 14 wins in dual match play. Playing at No. 5 singles, the freshman went 6-2 in SEC play and was a key factor in the team’s historic season. Her 56 combined wins in singles (29) and doubles (27) this season are the most in a single season in school history by a Gamecock freshman.

The last time South Carolina had three players wrap the season with final national rankings was in 2012 with Jaklin Alawi (95), Anya Morgina (42) and Dijana Stojic (78).

In doubles, Mia Horvit and Ingrid Gamarra Martins earned the highest ranking for the Gamecocks at No. 47. Hadley Berg and Paige Cline finished the season ranked at No. 49, followed by No. 83 Berg and Rachel Rohrabacher and No. 88 Davies and Silvia Chinellato. Horvit and Gamarra Martins finished the dual match season with a 12-3 record, while Berg and Cline wrapped the dual match season at 11-4 together.

No. 49 Berg and Cline earned the highest-ranked doubles win of the dual match season against Georgia’s No. 10 Elena Christo and Morgan Coppoc in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16,. The South Carolina tandem also earned the highest-ranked doubles win in the fall, downing No. 1 Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian of Michigan.

Four doubles tandems with final rankings mark the most for the Gamecocks in program history, with the previous highest total being two tandems in 2015, 2014, 2013, 2011, 2009, 2002 and 1996.
