Gamecocks Set To Open 2018 Season At Home
COLUMBIA, S.C.—- South Carolina cross country starts its 2018 season at home, playing host to the Carolina Challenge against a familiar set of regional foes at the Sandhill REC 5K course.
The women’s 5K is set for 9:00 a.m., with the men’s 5K following 40 minutes later. Both will run the same course that hosts the South Carolina High School League meet annually. The awards ceremony is scheduled tentatively for 10:15 a.m.
Fans attending the event, which is free to the public, should enter the Sandhill REC site at the traffic signal at Promenade Place and Clemson Road.
Joining South Carolina on the women’s side will be Winthrop, Paine, Georgia Southern, Gardner-Webb, Erskine, East Carolina, Coker, Coastal Carolina, Clemson and Benedict. The men’s 5K will include Winthrop, South Carolina State, Paine, Gardner-Webb, ECU, Coker, Coastal Carolina, Clemson and Benedict.
The Gamecocks return five of their top six finishers from 2017 to this season’s squad (Sarah-Sims McGrath, Allie Mueller, Colleen Openshaw, Heather Stone and Anna Stoddard). Mueller and Openshaw have been named captains for the year.
Joining those five on the course Saturday will be Morgan Adams, Sierra Biber, Emily Crounse, Haley Dietsch, Leah Ford, Lyndsey Fowler, Rachel Hensler, Kira Jenkins, Kelsey Larkin, Morgan Lee, Morgan Moseley, Maryah Nasir, Cailin Saylor, Hannah Twine and Brooke Wilson.
