Six Gamecocks ranked in ITA preseason poll

TEMPE, Ariz. – South Carolina women’s tennis has three individuals and three doubles teams ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Preseason National Rankings as announced by the ITA Tuesday.

This marks the first time the Gamecocks have entered a season with three singles players and three doubles teams ranked in the ITA poll. The announcement is also the most tandems South Carolina has boasted in the preseason rankings in program history.

In singles, senior Ingrid Gamarra Martins leads the Gamecocks as the No. 45-ranked player. Sophomore Megan Davies lands at the No. 81 spot and junior Mia Horvit rounds out South Carolina as the No. 96-ranked individual.

Also appearing on the doubles list, Gamarra Martins and Horvit stand as the No. 20-ranked tandem. Senior Paige Cline and Davies come in as the No. 39 doubles team, with senior Rachel Rohrabacher and junior Silvia Chinellato closing out the rankings at the No. 42 slot.

Last season, Gamarra Martins finished at No. 68 with an overall singles record of 17-8, including 11-5 in dual matches. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, native topped Georgia’s No. 2-ranked player in the nation, Katarina Jokic, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, for her highest win over an opponent so far in her collegiate career.

Davies concluded her freshman campaign in the No. 115 spot, tallying an impressive 29-8 overall singles mark, with a dual record of 14-5, playing predominately on court five. Horvit appeared in the ITA rankings three times last season, but did not see her name in the final poll. The junior compiled an overall singles record of 17-9 and went 11-5 in dual matches with most of her time coming from the No. 3 position.

As for doubles, Gamarra Martins and Horvit ended as the No 47-ranked duo after putting up a record of 12-3 during the spring season. The pair ended the year with wins against the No. 16 and 26 teams to make their appearance in the final poll.

This ranking is the first for Cline and Davies as a team, having not played together last season. Cline tallied an overall record of 20-11, while Davies finished at 27-8.

Rohrabacher and Chinellato are also seeing their names ranked together for the first time in their collegiate careers after both putting up impressive records during the 2017-18 season. Rohrabacher totaled a 20-3 mark, with Chinellato ending her sophomore year with a record of 17-6.

The first team rankings of the 2018-19 season will be released on January 2, 2019.
