Gamecocks Take Flight 1 Doubles; Compete for Three Singles Titles

Debbie Southern Fall Classic Day 2 Results

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The South Carolina doubles team of Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Mia Horvit claimed the title of Flight 1 Doubles Champions on day 2 of the Debbie Southern Fall Classic hosted by Furman at the Mickel Tennis Center.

The No. 22-ranked duo topped Shiori Fukuda and Isabelle Boulais of Ohio State, 8-4, rightfully earning their flight win.

“Overall, we saw some of the adjustments we needed to make (Saturday),” head coach Kevin Epley said. “It’s great to get some matches under our belt in consecutive days so we can work on getting better every match. I think we will see our best tennis (Sunday).”

Both Gamecocks also notched singles wins in their respective flights. Competing in Flight 1, No. 45 Gamarra Martins outlasted Georgia Tech’s No. 44 Kenya Jones in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3. No. 96 Horvit downed the No. 10-ranked freshman, Emmanouela Antonaki of Mississippi State, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, in Flight 3.

In Flight 2, Paige Cline also grabbed a singles victory over a top-rated freshman, edging North Carolina’s No. 6 Cameron Morra in three, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Gamarra Martins, Cline and Horvit will play No. 60 Alexa Graham of UNC, Duke’s No. 84 Kaitlyn McCarthy and No. 98 Summer Dvorak from Vanderbilt, respectively, for their flight titles.

Rachel Rohrabacher earned a three-set win in the back draw of Flight 6, topping Palmetto Series foe, Sydney Riley of Clemson, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

In doubles, Cline and Silvia Chinellato fought hard against Wake Forest’s No. 59-ranked duo of Eliza Omirou and Anna Brylin, ultimately falling, 8-7 (4), in Flight 2. The No. 58 tandem of Andrea Garcia and Julia Mikulski from Florida State proved to be too much for Flight 3 competitors Megan Davies and Rohrabacher, resulting in an 8-6 loss for the Gamecocks.

Chinellato won her first set opposite of Vanderbilt’s Carolyn Campana in her Flight 4 match before dropping it in three, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. In Flight 5, No. 81 Davies lost the first set to Emily Smith of Vanderbilt, 6-4, but blanked the Commodore in the second, 6-0, forcing a third. Davies and Smith went toe-to-toe in the third set, with the Gamecock ultimately dropping the match, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5, in Flight 6. Competing in Flight 9, Giulia Turconi lost her match to Wake Forest’s Lexi Franco, 7-5, 6-3.

The final day of singles action begins Sunday at 9 a.m. for the Gamecocks.
