Carolina Continues Play at ITA Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team advanced two doubles teams to quarterfinals and four singles players to the round of 16 after the second day of play at the ITA Carolina Regional Championship hosted by North Carolina at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Kicking off Friday’s competition, Megan Davies and Rachel Rohrabacher downed the No. 5-ranked team in the nation of Wake Forest’s Emma Davis and Chandler Carter, 8-3. Also topping a duo of Demon Deacons, No. 7-seeded and No. 20-ranked Mia Horvit and Ingrid Gamarra Martins won their match, 8-5, against Peyton Pesavento and Alexis Franco.
“We played pretty well (Friday) and some of us tapped into a high level at times,” head coach Kevin Epley said. “(Saturday) the competition will be tough and we are going to need to pick it up a gear and keep our level high throughout the day.”
In singles, No. 81 Davies cruised to a, 6-0, 6-1, victory over Alex Angyalosy of Clemson. Playing her second individual match of the day, the sophomore then outlasted NC State’s No. 59-ranked Adriana Reami, 7-6, 7-6 (3).
Carolina’s No. 45 Gamarra Martins also notched a pair of wins after a, 6-1, 6-2, defeat of Charlotte’s Alexandra Lee. The Gamecock followed up with an identical-set victory, 6-1, 6-1, opposite of Ana Castillo of Campbell.
No. 96 Mia Horvit first edged out Natalia Nikolopoulou of NC State, 7-6 (2), 6-1, then topped Wake Forest’s Carter in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Rounding out South Carolina’s two-win singles matches, Paige Cline beat Valeria Zarama from South Carolina Upstate, 6-2, 6-0. In her second competition of the day, the senior defeated the Demon Deacon’s Anna Brylin, 6-2, 6-3.
Silvia Chinellato claimed her first match against Eva Nyikos of College of Charleston, 6-2, 7-5. She then faced Duke’s No. 3-seeded and No. 31-ranked Meible Chi in the round of 32. Chinellato fought against Chi, taking her to three sets, but ultimately fell, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
Winning her first singles match of the day, Rohrabacher topped Katty Weymouth of Furman in three sets, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-4. Rohrabacher then went up against North Carolina’s No. 2-seeded and No. 60-ranked Alexa Graham, falling in the round of 32, 6-4, 6-0.
Also seeing a first-match victory, Kennedy Wicker earned a win against Elon’s Suzanne Zenoni, 6-2, 6-4. Wicker’s opponent of NC State’s Alana Smith proved to be too much after three, losing, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
Facing No. 84 Kaitlyn McCarthy from Duke, Giulia Turconi dropped her match, 6-2, 6-2.
Saturday play begins with singles at 9 a.m., including Davies opposite of No. 16 Davis from Wake Forest, Horvit against Winthrop’s No. 26 Lauren Proctor, Gamarra Martins playing Wake Forest’s No. 88 Eliza Omirou, and Cline competing against Liz Norman of NC State.
Up next in doubles, Horvit and Gamarra Martins take the court opposite of Clemson’s No. 16-ranked duo in Marie Leduc and Fernanda Navarro. Davies and Rohrabacher will see NC State’s tandem of Amanda Reboi and Adriana Reami.
