Columbia S.C. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team has five student-athletes set to compete at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships hosted at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz., taking place from Wednesday to Sunday, November 11.
No. 45 Ingrid Gamarra Martins earned an automatic entry for the tournament after advancing to the singles finals at the ITA Carolina Regional Championship. The senior sits at 9-2 this season, including a 5-2 mark against ranked opponents.
Gamarra Martins will also compete in doubles with partner Mia Horvit. Carolina’s No. 20-ranked tandem began the season by claiming the Flight 1 Doubles title at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic. After a bye in the first round of play at the ITA Carolina Regional Championship, the Gamecocks went 2-1, advancing to and falling in the quarterfinals.
“We’ve had some strong play throughout the semester in both singles and doubles and we are anxious to see how we stack up with the best players in the nation,” head coach Kevin Epley said. “It’s a great opportunity to have a tournament of this caliber so late in the fall season to get us some high-level exposure prior to the spring season.”
Also making it to the finals at the ITA Carolina Regional Championship, Megan Davies and Rachel Rohrabacher will be the second team to represent the Gamecocks in the doubles bracket. In the round of 16, Davies and Rohrabacher downed Wake Forest’s No. 5-ranked team of Emma Davis and Chandler Carter. The win marked the highest of both of the Gamecocks’ collegiate careers thus far.
Paige Cline rounds out the Gamecocks in the singles field. Most recently, Cline placed third at the Kitty Harrison Invitational after going undefeated in singles play. At the ITA Carolina Regional Championship, Cline defeated three-straight opponents, making it to the quarterfinals. Participating at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic, Cline won three-consecutive matches to be named champion of Flight 2 singles.
Action begins with singles at 10 a.m., ET when Gamarra Martins takes on Pepperdine’s No. 3-seeded and No. 41-ranked Evgeniya Levashova, while Cline hits the court opposite of LSU’s No. 38 Eden Richardson.
In doubles, Davies and Rohrabacher compete against Anna Bright and Jasie Dunk of Caolifornia at 5:30 p.m., ET. Gamarra Martins and Horvit will play at 6 p.m., ET, facing Virginia’s Meghan Kelley and Sofia Munero Sanchez.
