Jubb Advances at ITA Fall National Championships

Paul Jubb advanced to the round of 32 with a win over No. 40 Jack Tang (Columbia) at the ITA Fall National Championships.

SURPRISE, Ariz. – South Carolina’s No. 27 Paul Jubb advanced to the second round of the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships, winning 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 over Columbia’s No. 40 Jackie Tang Wednesday at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
 
Jubb advances to Thursday’s singles round of 32 where he will face Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore (Middle Tennessee State), who defeated Majed Kilani 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 64.
 
Yancy Dennis saw his singles run come to an end after an opening round comeback fell short to No. 30 August Holmgren. The Gamecocks duo of Jubb and Dennis fell short in their opening round doubles matchup to end the first day of competition.
 
#27 Paul Jubb (South Carolina) vs. #40 Jackie Tang (Columbia)
Having dropped just a single set on his way to the ITA Carolina Region Championship, Jubb had to rebound after dropping the first set to Columbia’s No. 40 Jackie Tang.
 
Jubb fired back with a dominant second, winning 26-of-36 points and evening the match with a 6-1 win.
 
The Gamecocks junior from Hull, England showed his metal in the third and won five straight games after falling behind 3-1 early.  Tang led 40-30 and looked to even the set at 4-4 before Jubb grabbed back-to-back points to break serve and go up 5-3.
 
Jubb capitalized on a second-consecutive deuce point as he let a second return from Tang fall wide, clinching his spot in the second round with a 6-3 win in the third.
 
Yancy Dennis (South Carolina) vs. #30 Holmgren (San Diego)
Holmgren came out strong in the match, winning 75 percent of his 16 first-serve points while putting away all four of his second-serve attempts in the opening set.
 
Dennis dropped the first 6-1 but rebounded nicely to even the match with a 6-3 win in set two.  Dennis converted on 81 percent (17-of-21) of his successful first serves in the second set, winning three straight games to even the match at 1-1.
 
Holmgren was successful on his two break-point opportunities in the third set, jumping out to 4-1 lead before finishing off the match with a 6-2 third set.
 
#49 Dennis/Jubb (South Carolina) vs. #40 Cukierman/Smith (Southern Cal)
After falling behind quickly to begin the match, Carolina’s 49th-ranked Dennis and Jubb responded to even the first set at 3-3.  The Southern California tandem would take three of the next four games to notch a 6-4 win in the opening set.
 
Cukierman and Smith went up a break to begin the second and held on the rest of the way to advance into the round of 16.
