Jubb Locks Up Spot in Round of 16

Paul Jubb prevailed in a second-consecutive three-set match, defeating Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore (MTSU) to claim a spot in the round of 16 at the ITA Fall National Championships.

SURPRISE, Ariz. – South Carolina’s No. 27 Paul Jubb continues to advance through the singles main draw at the ITA Fall National Championships, winning in three sets on Thursday over Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore (MTSU) at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
 
Jubb was tested after a slow start and an opening set loss for a second-consecutive match, but ultimately prevailed in three, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. 
 
The tournament’s third overall seed, Jubb will now face Zeke Clark (Illinois), who defeated Mississippi State’s Niclas Braun 6-4, 6-3, in Friday’s round of 16.

Jubb fell behind a break to begin the match and was never able to pull back even as Morell Raschiatore edged out a 6-4 win to go ahead by a set.
 
The Gamecocks junior dominated the second, winning 27-of-38 (71 percent) points in the set to even the match at one set all with a 6-1 victory.
 
Jubb went on to secure his ninth-consecutive singles win with a comfortable 6-2 third set, punching his ticket into the round of 16.
 
Yancy Dennis (South Carolina) vs. #19 Alex Lebedev (Notre Dame) – Singles Consolation
Dennis suffered from five double faults on the afternoon as he was unable to keep pace with No. 19 Alex Lebedev (Notre Dame). Lebedev landed just 40 percent of his first serves in play, but had six service aces in a 6-2, 6-3 consolation win over Dennis.

The Gamecocks fell in their lone consolation match of the tournament as Dennis and Jubb dropped a tight first set to the ninth-ranked doubles team in the nation/, losing 8-6 in a first set breaker to fall behind in the match.  Lin and Matheson of Columbia then followed up with a 6-4 win in the second set to advance into the second round of consolation matches.
