Carolina’s Run Ends in the Semifinals at Oracle ITA National Fall Championships
SURPRISE, Ariz. – South Carolina’s doubles team of Mia Horvit and Ingrid Gamarra Martins had their tournament run come to a close after a doubles loss in semifinals on Saturday at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
In the main draw semifinals, No. 20 Horvit and Gamarra Martins took the court opposite of in-state rivals No. 16 Marie Leduc and Fernanda Navarro of Clemson. Going back-and-forth in the first set, the Tigers just edged out the Gamecocks, claiming the first set, 7-6 (8).
Horvit and Gamarra Martins fell behind, 3-1, early in the second set. Carolina rallied a couple of times, bringing it within one at 4-3 and again, 5-4. In the end, Clemson’s duo proved to be too much for the Gamecocks, falling, 7-6 (8), 6-4, to the Tigers.
No. 45 Gamarra Martins started strong against No. 24 Emily Arbuthnott of Stanford, but was not able to top her higher ranked opponent, falling, 7-6 (5) 6-2.
Megan Davies and Rachel Rohrabacher fought hard against Vera Ploner and Martina Okalova of Tulsa, giving them a tough first set. Ultimately, the Hurricanes came out on top, 7-6 (2), 6-1.
