TEMPE, Ariz. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team has three individuals and three doubles teams ranked in the end-of-fall Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings as announced Wednesday afternoon.
Representing the Gamecocks in singles is No. 12 Ingrid Gamarra Martins, No. 25 Paige Cline and No. 69 Mia Horvit. In doubles, Gamarra Martins and Horvit are at No. 11, while Megan Davies and Rachel Rohrabacher come in at No. 23 and Gamarra Martins and Silvia Chinellato are tied for No. 59.
Gamarra Martins’ No. 12 ranking is the highest for South Carolina since she sat at the same spot during the 2016-17 season. Beginning the fall season ranked at No. 45, the senior defeated five-straight opponents, advancing to the singles finals at the ITA Carolina Regional Championship. With her finals position, Gamarra Martins earned an automatic bid to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. Gamarra Martins went 12-4, facing nine nationally ranked opponents, ending 5-4 against such opponents.
Catapulting into the rankings, Cline’s name was not on the preseason list. Her career-high No. 25 ranking comes after she claimed Flight 2 singles at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic, placed third at the Kitty Harrison Invitational, advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Carolina Regional Championship, and earned a bid to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. Cline finished the fall season at 9-3, including 5-2 opposite of ranked opponents.
Horvit also saw success during the fall, taking the title of champion of Flight 3 singles at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic. The junior played steadily throughout the season, bringing her overall record to 7-2 and 3-1 against nationally ranked opponents and rising from her original No. 96 ranking.
Moving from No. 20 to No. 11 in the doubles rankings, Horvit and Gamarra Martins put up a record of 10-2, including 3-2 when facing ranked opponents. Carolina’s tandem began the fall season by winning the Flight 1 doubles title at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic. After a bye in the first round of the ITA Carolina Regional Championship, the Gamecocks advanced to the quarterfinals. Horvit and Gamarra Martins ended their fall season by earning a spot at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships where they made it all the way to the semifinals before falling.
Davies and Rohrabacher enter the rankings at No. 23 after not being ranked at the beginning of the season. Pairing up for the second time in their careers, the Gamecocks went on a five-match winning streak, making their way to the doubles finals at the ITA Carolina Regional Championship. The tandem also participated at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in main draw and consolation doubles. Davies and Rohrabacher earned wins over both the No. 4-ranked and No. 5-ranked doubles teams in the country. They finished at 8-6 overall and went undefeated against ranked opponents, 3-0.
Sneaking into the rankings, Gamarra Martins and Chinellato went 1-0 together this fall after defeating NC State’s Amanda Rebol and Adriana Reami, 7-5, at the Kitty Harrison Invitational.
The Gamecocks open the spring season by hosting Arizona State and California for 2019 ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Carolina Tennis Center.
