June 12, 2018
COLUMBIA, S.C. — No. 12 South Carolina softball’s coaching staff was named one of eleven programs to be honored by the NFCA as a 2018 Division I Regional Coaching Staff of the Year, the organization announced Tuesday. Beverly Smith, Lisa Navas, Matt Lisle and Matt Stewart were named the Southeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year following a 49-17 season in which the Gamecocks reached a super regional for just the second time in program history.
This is the first regional coaching staff of the year honor under the leadership of Smith.
The Carolina staff joins the staffs from Oklahoma, St. Francis University, Michigan, Ohio, Liberty, Drake, Hofstra, Oregon, Arkansas and Arizona State. The 11 programs, along with national champion Florida State, are eligible for the NFCA’s Division I Coaching Staff of the Year award. The winner will be announced on June 27.
The 49 wins on the year are the most of the Smith era and are the most since the Gamecocks won 49 in 1999. This was the 15th time in program history Carolina has won 40 or more games and the first time since 2003 that Gamecocks had done so.
