Gamarra Martins and Horvit Top the ITA Doubles Poll at No. 1
TEMPE, Ariz. – The South Carolina doubles team of senior Ingrid Gamarra Martins and junior Mia Horvit have been named the No. 1-ranked tandem in the country as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Tuesday afternoon.
Not only have they topped the ITA’s chart, but they are now the highest ranked pair in South Carolina history. The recognition comes after Gamarra Martins and Horvit defeated two ranked opponents, including the No. 8-ranked team of Sadie Hammond and Kaitlin Staines of Tennessee, 6-4, and No. 74 Katarina Jokic and Lourdes Carle from Georgia, 6-2.
Overall, Gamarra Martins and Horvit have amassed an 18-3 record, including 8-1 in dual matches at the No. 1 position. They are also 7-3 against nationally ranked opponents.
Making history on the singles side, Gamarra Martins has, once again, surpassed her own record, becoming the Gamecocks’ highest-ranked individual at No. 7. Playing at the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup, Gamarra Martins is 7-1 and has an overall mark of 19-5.
As a team, Carolina sits at No. 6 in the rankings after defeating No. 16-ranked Tennessee, 4-1, and battling with undefeated and No. 2-ranked Georgia this past weekend.
Senior Paige Cline jumped up to No. 37 from No. 49 after adding a win over then-ranked No. 16 Marta Gonzalez of Georgia, 6-0, 7-5. Also seeing her name in the singles poll, Horvit comes in at No. 118.
Rounding out the rankings for South Carolina, senior Rachel Rohrabacher and sophomore Megan Davies are the No. 32-ranked tandem.
