No. 6 South Carolina Faces Two Top-25 Opponents on the Road
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina’s No. 1-ranked doubles team of senior Ingrid Gamarra Martins and junior Mia Horvit look to lead their team as the Gamecocks hit the road for two ranked matchups against Vanderbilt and Kentucky, respectively.
Up first, No. 6 Carolina (10-3, 5-1 SEC) competes against No. 5-ranked Vanderbilt (10-4, 5-1 SEC) on Friday at 4:30 ET. Next, the Gamecocks and No. 23 Kentucky (14-3, 4-2 SEC) at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
South Carolina
The Gamecocks head into the weekend after topping then-ranked No. 16 Tennessee, 4-1. Carolina then went toe-to-toe with undefeated and No. 2 Georgia before falling, 4-2, to the ITA Indoor Champions.
Competing at the No. 1 position, Gamarra Martins and Horvit are 8-1 in dual matches and are on a five-match win streak matches. Also on a win streak in doubles, sophomores Megan Davies and Kennedy Wicker have claimed six-consecutive matches at the No. 3 position.
Carolina’s roster is also home to three ranked singles players in No. 7 Gamarra Martins, No. 37 Paige Cline and No. 118 Horvit. On court one, Gamarra Martins has tallied a record of 7-1 in duals. Cline has put up a record of 5-3 at the No. 2 spot, including a defeat of the No. 16-ranked player. Playing at No. 3 for the Gamecocks, Horvit is 8-2 in dual matches.
Vanderbilt
Currently, South Carolina and the Commodores are tied for second in the SEC at 5-1. Vanderbilt leads the overall record between the two programs, 23-13, including wins in the last three meetings.
In their last weekend of action, the Commodores fell to Texas A&M, 4-2, and topped LSU, 4-3.
Vanderbilt has five players ranked in the singles poll: No. 6 Fernanda Contreras, No. 13 Christina Rosca, No. 53 Amanda Meyer, No. 62 Georgia Drummy and No. 97 Emily Smith.
Kentucky
In the head-to-head series, the Gamecocks lead the Wildcats, 24-15, and have won six-straight matches. Kentucky is going into the weekend off of a loss to Texas A&M, 4-1. Prior to the competition with South Carolina, UK faces off against Florida on Friday.
Kentucky has one ranked singles player in No. 35 Justina Mikulskyte. Lining up at the No. 1 position, Mikulskyte is 9-3 in dual matches with a 4-1 mark against nationally ranked opponents.
Hot for the Wildcats, Lesedi Jacobs has claimed eight victories in-a-row, playing at the No. 2 and 3 positions. She is undefeated at the No. 2 spot, 3-0, and is 8-2 on court three.
