Gamecocks Down Coastal Carolina in Midweek Tilt

Sweeps across the top four pairs key the team's 12th win of the season

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A 4-1 win over Coastal Carolina at home Wednesday night marked the ninth victory in South Carolina beach volleyball’s last 10 matches. The Gamecocks are now 12-6 overall for the season and 5-1 at Wheeler Beach.

Jess Vastine and Hannah Edelman earned a sweep with a 21-10, 21-17 decision at the number four pairing, helping the Gamecocks split the opening wave after Coastal Carolina (11-9) pulled out the three-set win in the fives. The second wave of matches would be dominated by the home side, who swept the final three to run away with the win over the Chanticleers. Lydia Dimke and Katie Smith earned their seventh win in a row at number two with a 21-15, 21-14 win, and Cadie Bates and Shannon Williams clinched the overall team win with a 21-11, 21-7 in the top pairing. The two would actually trail 11-10 in the first set, but outscored Coastal Carolina 32-7 for the remainder of their match.

There is one more standalone match left on the schedule before the team resumes normal tournament play. South Carolina will host Arizona State on Sunday, March 31 for a noon dual. Admission is free all season long at Wheeler Beach.
