No. 19 Gamecocks in Fourth at Augusta Haskins Award Invitational

Carolina shot field-best 276 (-12) in the second round late this afternoon

AUGUSTA, Ga. — No. 19 South Carolina is in fourth place after day one of the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational with a 36-hole total of 558 (-18). The Gamecocks fired the lowest round in the field late this afternoon in round two with a 276 (-12) and posted another red number in round one this morning with a 282 (-6).

Junior Jamie Wilson and senior Will Miles paced Carolina in the second round. Wilson matched a career-best with a 66 (-6) and Miles carded a bogey-free 67 (-5). Wilson, who is fresh off a third-place finish at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate (March 24-26), is T-4th at 7-under overall for the tournament. The Awendaw, S.C., native also posted a red number in the opening round with a 71 (-1). He has five-straight under par rounds dating back to Bulls Bay. Miles, who shot 76 (+4) this morning, climbed 40 spots on the leaderboard in the second round to T-25th at 1-under overall for the tournament with his lights out round this afternoon. The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native shot 36 (E) on the back nine and 31 (-5) on the front with five birdies.

No. 3 Wake Forest is in the lead at 29-under (547) after opening with a 19-under, 269 this morning. Cameron Young, the individual leader who plays for the Demon Deacons, set the tournament record with a 9-under 63 in the opening round. He’s six shots clear of the field at 16-under after a 65 in round two. No. 7 Texas is two shots off the pace at 27-under (549) while Arkansas sits one shot in front of Carolina at 19-under (557).

“We played better in the afternoon round, but overall we were a little sloppy today I thought,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “We didn’t take advantage of the par-5s and some of the easier holes all day. Jamie (Wilson) and Will (Miles) really stepped up in the second round and we’re going to need some low scores tomorrow to make a run at Wake Forest.”

Carolina led the field in par-3 scoring average (3.03, +1), but ranks ninth in par-5 scoring average (4.73, -11).

Like Wilson, senior Ryan Stachler posted consecutive red numbers with a first round 71 (-1) and a second round 70 (-2). The Alpharetta, Ga., native carded a bogey-free 30 (-6) on the back nine this afternoon with six birdies. He and Wilson are tied for the team lead with 10 red numbers (T-6th in the field). Stachler is T-18th at 3-under.

Senior Scott Stevens shot 69 (-3) this morning and 73 (+1) this afternoon. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native is T-22nd at 2-under overall. Junior Caleb Proveaux also posted a red number this morning with a 71 (-1). He shot 76 (+4) this afternoon and is T-51st (+3) after bogeying three of his final four holes.

The Gamecocks will be paired with Augusta and Mercer for the final round on Sunday. Proveaux will lead things off at 9:20 a.m. ET on hole one.
