NEW YORK, N.Y. – Former Gamecock standout and current Kansas City Royal Whit Merrifield has been named to the American League All-Star Game roster, it was announced on Sunday evening (June 30). Merrifield becomes the first Gamecock named to the All-Star roster since Justin Smoak in 2017.

The MLB All-Star Game will take place at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday, July 9 and will be televised on Fox.

Merrifield earns his first All-Star nod after hitting .301 with 59 runs scored, 22 doubles, 11 home runs and 42 RBI in 84 games played in 2019. Merrifield is slugging .497 and has a .848 OPS through games of June 30 while playing five different positions for the Royals this season. Last season, Merrifield led the majors in hits (192) and stolen bases (45).

As a Gamecock, Merrifield hit .329 with 37 doubles, five triples, 27 home runs and 117 RBI in his three-year career. He is best known for producing the game-winning hit in Carolina’s 2-1, 11-inning win over UCLA to win the 2010 national championship.
