Awotunde Named to USATF 'The Match' Roster

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina track and field legend Josh Awotunde has been named to the Team USATF roster ahead of the historical head-to-head duel ‘The Match’, which will be held in Minsk, Belarus, September 9-10 at the Dinamo National Olympic Stadium.

Marking a return to the famous intercontinental duels of the 1960s and 70s, the best of Europe’s athletes will take on Team USATF in the last major athletics competition before this year’s IAAF World Championships in Doha.

Twenty-eight Olympians, eight Olympic medalists and 11 world championship medalists are among the 139 athletes selected to represent Team USATF at The Match Europe vs. USA – Minsk 2019 in the Belarus capital.

Since graduating from Carolina, Awotunde has performed well on the professional circuit. He finished fifth at last week’s USATF Outdoor Championships and won the Rafer Johnson Invitational in Los Angeles with a throw of 21.13m (69-4) in April. This will be Awotunde’s second time representing the United States in international competition after he competed at the 2019 Pan American Games in early August.

The two-day meeting with 37 track and field events will be broadcast live, September 9-10, on NBCSN and NBC Sports Gold from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
