Volleyball Hosts Charlotte for Home Opener Tuesday Night

First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Carolina Volleyball Center

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After two weeks on the road, Gamecock volleyball returns to the friendly confines of the Carolina Volleyball Center on Tuesday night for their home opener against Charlotte. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. against the 49ers (4-3).

Students attending the match should note that their entrance to the facility has changed for 2019. Instead of entering through the Park Street side of the gym, students should now enter at the top of the building, located by the Blossom and Assembly Street intersection. Ticket holders should still plan to enter via the Park Street entrance.

Please refer to the PARKING MAP for a bird’s-eye view of the Carolina Volleyball Center and surrounding areas.

It will be a busy week for the Gamecocks, who are in the middle of a stretch of six games in seven days. After finishing the weekend at the UCF Challenge with a pair of wins, South Carolina sits at 3-3 for the season and will also play matches in Clemson this Thursday and Friday after Tuesday’s home opener. Charlotte has yet to win a match in the all-time series, but did take a set from the Gamecocks in last season’s meeting. The 49ers lead Conference USA with a 2.58 blocks per set and 17.17 digs/set. Individually libero Yumi Garcia paces the conference with 6.48 digs per set, and Tyra Galloway leads the league in both blocks (1.42/set) and hitting percentage (.442).

For the Gamecocks, senior Claire Edwards made the news as the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Week. The middle blocker did a little bit of everything for the team during its weekend in Orlando, recording 23 kills and 17 blocks in 10 sets. It is the first weekly conference honor for Edwards in her career, and is just the second Gamecock individual to earn a weekly honor since 2016. Also standing out this weekend were Addie Bryant and Jess Vastine, who made the all-tournament team. Vastine finished with 26 kills and 25 digs over the 10 sets played; Bryant had 44 digs as the team’s libero, and also pitched in 14 assists.

Single-game tickets are on sale for $5 for adults and $3 for youth.
