Monheimer Sends Gamecocks To Another Overtime Victory

Carolina wins third-straight match in extra time

COLUMBIA, S.C. —- South Carolina men’s soccer earned its third-consecutive overtime victory with a 1-0 shutout of Mercer on Wednesday night at Stone Stadium. Senior Tucker Monheimer’s finish at the 94th minute provided the Gamecocks with another exciting extra-time finish to remain undefeated at home in the early season.

The victory marked Carolina’s second shutout in overtime. Outside the 2019 season, South Carolina has achieved that mark just one other time (2010) in the past 32 years of action. This is the first time since 2014 Carolina has won two or more matches in extra time.

With the win the Gamecocks improved to 3-1 on the season while Mercer dropped to 4-1. Carolina is now just one win away from 500 as a program.

“I want to thank our students and our fans for coming out and wearing teal,” head coach Mark Berson said. “And supporting our ovarian cancer awareness month. It’s great to see. Joe O’Clair in marketing had the teal thunder sticks out there and the fans were here supporting the team. It’s really great to see. That’s the Carolina community. That’s the community of Columbia. It’s people coming together and supporting great imitative. It was great to look up and see people coming in teal.”

The young Gamecocks looked fresh and ready for action against a perennial tournament team in Mercer. Both teams fought in a physical back-and-forth match through 90 minutes as Carolina looked ahead to its third-straight extra time finish.

Once again, Monheimer came through with the finish to send the Gamecocks to victory. Monheimer started the streak with the overtime winner against Gardner-Webb in the 2-1 win on Sept. 3.

Carolina now looks ahead to the start of league play in Conference USA with Marshall this Saturday on the road.
