Gamecocks Drop Match At UCF

Carolina returns to conference play next week

ORLANDO, Fla.  —- South Carolina men’s soccer dropped a 2-0 match to No. 15 UCF on Sunday at the UCF Track and Soccer Complex. The Knight’s jumped out to a quick lead with two first-half goals while goalie Yannik Oettl kept the Gamecocks off the board in the second period to secure the victory.

UCF’s Cal Jennings’ goal at the 7-minute mark gave the Knight’s an early 1-0 lead before Louis Perez’s finish with 17 minutes left in the first half off the Andres Hernandez assist extended the lead to 2-0 at halftime in favor of the hosts.

With the result, Carolina dropped to 4-3 while UCF improved to 5-1-1.

“Tough result for us tonight,” head coach Mark Berson said. “We weren’t able to generate much of an attack. That kept us under pressure for a large part of the game. The guys worked hard and we have a lot of things we can work on going forward to improve. And that’s our goal for the next match.”

The story of the match was chances as UCF out-shot the Gamecocks 24-3, with four shots on goal, and had nine corners.

Carolina gets a much-needed rest to start the week before returning to conference action Friday in Charlotte against the 13th-ranked 49ers.
