Gamecocks Drop Match At Charlotte

Carolina to return home for three-straight matches

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —- South Carolina men’s soccer dropped a 4-0 match to No. 11 Charlotte on Friday night at Transamerica Field. The 49ers jumped out to an early lead with a goal 26 minutes into the contest while goalkeeper Elliot Panicco posted a shutout to help secure the victory.
With the result, Charlotte improved to 6-0-2 (2-0-1 C-USA) while Carolina moved to 4-4 (0-2).
Fresh from four days of rest, the Gamecocks attacked early with three quick shots in the first 20 minutes of action to keep the 49ers under pressure in the Queen City. Charlotte later earned the first finish, though, as Joe Brito’s goal at the 26-minute mark gave the hosts the 1-0 lead they wouldn’t surrender.
While it looked as though both teams would head to halftime with just one goal on the board, Luke Johnson’s finish off the Teddy Chauche assist with 6 minutes remaining before the intermission pushed the Charlotte advantage to 2-0.
After a slow start to the second half, the 49ers pushed the lead to 3-0 off the Axel Sigurdanson goal and Teddy Chaouche assist at the 66-minute mark. Owen Peeler’s goal off the Chance Pellerin assist at the 88-minute mark closed out the 4-0 win for Charlotte.
The story of the match was chances as the 49ers possessed an 18-5 advantage in shots and 7-1 edge in shots on goal. Charlotte finished the night with six corners in contrast to two for the Gamecocks.
Brian Banahan, Andrew Halloran, Tucker Monheimer, Zach Kirkwood and Parker League had the five shots for Carolina.
