Stone Sets School 6K Record at 20:38.8

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – South Carolina junior Heather Stone ran the fastest 6K time in school history on Saturday afternoon at the Paul Short Run at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course in Bethlehem, Pa.

Stone finished her first 6K of the season in 20:38.8, beating the previous record of 20:40.4, set by Kayla Lampe in 2012. Coming in second for the Gamecocks, Anna Kathryn Stoddard came across the line at the 21:19.2 mark.

“You can’t do much better than Heather Stone’s school record,” cross country coach Andrew Allden said. “She passed a lot of people who have been All-SEC, All-Region and have done a tremendous job for us in the past. That was an outstanding run at 20:38. AK Stoddard continues her return to form as she got within 10 seconds of her PR so that was very promising.”

Running in her first 6K, Hannah Twine was the third finisher for Carolina at 21:54.7. Hillary Neely, a former field hockey player, ran in just her third-ever cross country race, taking the fourth-place position with a time of 22:17.9. Rounding out the top-five, Maryah Nasir earned a PR on the day at 22:23.1, topping her previous best of 22:45.6, which she set at the 2018 NCAA Southeast Regional.

“Hannah Twine in her first 6K as a redshirt freshman for us, breaking 22 minutes at 21:54, having three people average that fast puts us in a good position as we head toward SECs and the regional,” said Allden. “We had a very solid top five. Hillary Neely, I can’t say enough about somebody who, this is her third cross country race ever, runs number four us and runs in the 22-minute range for 6K. Maryah Nasir continues to mature as a country runner as our number five (Saturday). All-in-all, an outstanding performance from our top five.”
