Baseball Bests Georgia Tech in Fall Scrimmage
The Gamecocks plated five runs in the ninth, three on a home run from Wes Clarke.
COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team defeated Georgia Tech, 10-6, in a 12-inning fall scrimmage Sunday afternoon (Oct. 20) at Founders Park. It was Carolina’s second scrimmage this fall against outside competition.
Georgia Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Gamecocks answered with a run in the bottom of the third as Brennan Milone singled to right to score George Callil. Carolina then took the lead in the fourth as Bryant Bowen went the other way on an RBI single and Shane Shifflett scored on a wild pitch.
The game remained 3-2 until the top of the ninth, when Georgia Tech put up three runs in the frame. Carolina again answered, this time with five runs. Anthony Amicangelo brought in a run with a single to right on a hit-and-run. Shifflett scored again on a wild pitch and Wes Clarke had the big hit, a three-run home run to center field, making it 8-5 Gamecocks.
The two teams traded solo home runs in the 10th, as Colin Burgess deposited one in the seats in left. The Gamecocks ended the scoring in the 11th on a Noah Campbell sacrifice fly.
Carolina had some impressive pitching performances in the scrimmage. Brannon Jordan was the only Gamecock to pitch multiple innings as he struck out four in two innings of work. Carmen Mlodzinski and Parker Coyne had three strikeouts apiece and six pitchers (Cam Tringali, Daniel Lloyd, Jordan, Trey Tujetsch, TJ Shook and RJ Dantin) did not allow a hit.
Bowen, Amicangelo and Milone had two hits apiece, with Clarke driving in three runs. Carolina had 10 hits on the day with four extra-base hits.
