Carolina Wraps Up at ITA Regionals
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis fell just short of a pair of titles at the ITA Carolina Region Championships on Sunday at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton started the fourth day of play on a high note, outlasting Furman’s Julia Adams and Madison Dillon, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9, advancing the Gamecock duo to the Finals. In the final match of the draw, Chinellato and Shelton faced No. 1-seeded and No. 1-ranked Anna Rogers and Alana Smith from N.C. State. Carolina was not able to top the Wolfpack’s pair, falling, 6-4, 6-2.
In singles Semifinals, No. 9-seeded and No. 125-ranked Megan Davies took on Duke’s No. 1-seeded and No. 5-ranked Kelly Chen. Davies could not pull off the upset, dropping the match, 6-4, 6-0.
“The Carolina region is one of the toughest in the nation so we knew we were gonna have good competition,” head coach Kevin Epley said. “Overall, we are happy with how we performed. Some players had big breakthroughs and others continued to improve. Still, we have a lot to work on to be prepared for the spring season so we are looking forward to getting back to practice.”
Next, the Gamecocks will get in a few days of practice before heading to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Kitty Harrison Invitational hosted by North Carolina from Friday, Nov. 1 to Sunday, Nov. 3.
