Gamecocks Set to Finish Fall in Hawaii This Weekend

Carolina competing in the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic for the fourth-straight season

LAHAINA, Hawaii For the fourth-straight year, South Carolina will conclude the fall portion of its schedule out west in the Pacific at the Ka’anapli Collegiate Classic. The Gamecocks have fared well in the Aloha State, with three top-five finishes including a runner-up showing in 2017.

“It’s always a great way to end the fall, going out to Maui,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “We didn’t play that great at Isleworth, but we finished strong the last round, and hopefully created a little momentum to finish up the fall in a strong way.”

It’s the same five-man lineup for Carolina it’s been all fall season just shuffled around again. Seniors Caleb Proveaux and Jamie Wilson lead the way in the top-two spots. Junior Jack Parrott is the man in the middle. Sophomore Ryan Hall is No. 4 with freshman Jack Wall in the fifth spot.

Built on 300 acres of land once home to Hawaiian royalty, Ka’anapali Golf Courses present golfers with pristine conditions and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and West Maui Mountains.

Opened in 1962 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the par-71, 6,700-yard Royal Ka’anapali Course features wide fairways and undulating greens which make it both distinctive and demanding.  The tournament-tested layout hosted the Champions Tour Ka’anapali Classic for 14 years, Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf, the Canada Cup and LPGA Kemper Open, welcoming Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Greg Norman, Fred Couples, Jan Stephenson, Betsy King and other golf legends.

“It’s a little bit of a tricky golf course out there, especially if the wind blows,” said McDonald. “It’s just one of those places you have to be patient around. You can make a lot of birdies if the wind dies down, or you get the wind in a certain direction. Hopefully we show up the first round with a little bit more of a sense of urgency, and don’t put ourselves behind the 8-ball so much going into the last day or so, like we’ve been doing.”

There will be a shotgun start for the opening round on Friday beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET. The Gamecocks will start on holes four through six at the Royal Ka’anapali Course. Carolina will be paired with No. 5 Oklahoma, Boise State and North Texas for the first 18 holes of the tournament.

Eight of the 20 teams in the field this week are ranked in the top-50 of the latest Golfstat Team Rankings. The Sooners are the top-ranked team competing.
