Fisk Honored as National Player of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s soccer senior Grace Fisk was named the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday. The award is the first national weekly recognition for Fisk and is the first since Sept. 18, 2018, when Mikayla Krzeczowski earned the honor.

“Grace had a great weekend at the SEC Tournament,” South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith said. “She was honored with the MVP for a reason. She our senior leader in the back and played every minute for us. She helped limiting our opponents’ chances and we didn’t allow a single goal which is exceptional. We’re really excited for her to be nationally recognized for all of her hard work.”

The Bromley, London, native was a dominant force through Carolina’s three wins on the way to the SEC Tournament title. Carolina’s stout defense allowed just six total shots on goal during three matches against two 2019 NCAA Tournament teams in Vanderbilt and Arkansas.

This award adds to the already large list of accomplishments Fisk has earned this season and in her career. Earlier this season Fisk was named the SEC Co-Defender of the Year and was an All-SEC First Team honoree for the third time in her career. She’s the only player in SEC history to earn three major SEC defensive players of the year in a career.

Fisk has played in all 20 matches for the Gamecocks this season with 14 ending in clean sheets. Carolina conceded just seven goals in 20 matches, the best in the SEC, and owns a 0.33 goals against average which is second in the NCAA.

Fresh off of its SEC Tournament championship, the No. 2 seed South Carolina women’s soccer team (16-1-3, 7-0-3 SEC) will take on Samford (13-3-5, 7-1-1 SoCon) on Nov. 16, at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. The winner of this first-round match will face the winner of the Notre Dame/Saint Louis match.
