No. 3 Gamecocks Fall to No. 1 Auburn, 14-6

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – South Carolina junior Jordan Scott was awarded the Most Outstanding Player (MOP) award in Reining in Carolina’s, 14-6, loss to Auburn on Saturday afternoon at One Wood Farm.

The No. 3 Gamecocks are now 5-4 on the season and 1-3 against SEC opponents. The No. 1 Tigers keep their undefeated record, moving to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in the SEC. Although South Carolina fell to top-ranked Auburn, the Gamecocks scored the second-most points against the Tigers this season.

“I think our girls, as a whole, rode really well today,” head coach Boo Major said. “We always have things we’ve got to work on. A lot of scores were close, some weren’t, but I’m very pleased with the way our girls rode.”

In Equitation Over Fences, Madison Brayman kicked things off with a, 82-80, victory over Hayley Iannotti on Cita. Brayman’s win was the first point of the day and the Gamecocks’ only in fences. Although she dropped her ride, Tyler Petrie tallied the highest score of the day for Carolina, and of her collegiate career thus far, with a 90 on Batman.

Competing in Horsemanship, Quinn Brandt edged out Kara Kaufmann by half of a point, 65.5-65, on Peaches. Brandt’s takedown served as the lone point for Carolina in the first Western event.

South Carolina notched two wins against the top-ranked Tigers in Reining. First, Scott topped Ali Fratessa by two, 73.5-71.5, on Sparky. Ending the event with a victory, Carolina Gute outrode Deanna Green on Paddy, 69.5-68.5.

Rounding out the day with Equitation on the Flat, the Gamecocks started strong with Madison Sellman earning a, 84-79, win on Leon opposite of Iannotti. Taking Carolina’s second point in the event, Grady Lyman downed Caitlin Boyle on Leon, 84-76.

“It was a disappointing day for us, but we’re not going to let that get us down,” Major said. “Losing to the number one team in the country isn’t the total end of the world. We’ve got to jump back up and get ready for a very competitive Texas A&M team next weekend.”

Up next, the Gamecocks compete at Texas A&M on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m., ET.
