Martins, Cline and Horvit Selected for NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – South Carolina women’s tennis seniors Ingrid Martins and Paige Cline and junior Mia Horvit have been selected to compete in the upcoming 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championships as announced Tuesday evening.

Martins earned an automatic qualification for the singles field and is the No. 4 seed in the bracket. Cline will play as a No. 9-16 seed after getting an at-large selection for singles. In doubles, Horvit and Martins automatically qualified for the championship and will compete as a No. 5-8 seed.

The three Gamecocks are no strangers to the individual championships, having all been there before. Martins competed in the singles bracket in both 2017 and 2018, while Cline participated in doubles in 2016 and 2017. Horvit joined her teammates in 2017, appearing in the singles field.

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 16-19.

All three veteran student-athletes have played pivotal roles in South Carolina’s success this season, including seeing a program-high ranking of No. 3 in the nation. In singles, No. 4-ranked Martins set a program record by coming in at No. 4 and has stayed there for over three weeks. Paired up in doubles, Horvit and Martins achieved another program-high, topping the poll at the No. 1. Cline reached a personal best in her collegiate career after earning a No. 16 ranking in singles.

Martins owns a 14-2 dual-match record at the No. 1 position and is 12-2 against nationally-ranked opponents. Most recently, she downed the nation’s No. 1-ranked player in her team’s defeat of No. 1 Georgia for Carolina’s first SEC Championship in program history. For her efforts, Martins was named the tournament MVP, as well as SEC Player of the Year, another first for the Gamecock history book.

Competing at the No. 2 spot for South Carolina, Cline is 12-4 in duals and 7-3 when facing ranked opponents. Cline claimed both of her matches in the semifinals and finals, giving her team the momentum it needed to seal the victories.

In doubles, No. 7-ranked Horvit and Martins play at the top spot in the lineup. Together they are 13-4 in dual matches and 10-5 against ranked counterparts. Overall, the Gamecock tandem has tallied a mark of 23-6.

The NCAA Championships kicks off this weekend with South Carolina hosting the first two rounds of play. The Gamecocks face off against North Florida at 2 p.m. ET on Friday, May 3.
