Gamecocks' NCAA Championships Bid Falls Short at Cle Elum Regional

Cle Elum, Wash. – No. 9 South Carolina women’s golf ended its season just short of the 2019 NCAA Championships, finishing in 10th at the Cle Elum Regional. The Gamecocks shot 1-under par (287), their best score of the week, but could not move into the top six to advance out of the Cle Elum Regional.

“NCAA Regionals is always a tough and challenge week, and our team’s history has been strong in the event,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Anderson said. “The last couple weeks this group has experienced a wide range of emotions and adversity. Unfortunately, we didn’t prevail this week. Our team had an incredible season, and I’m extremely proud of our overall body of work this season. This group never quit.”

South Carolina battled its way to a tie for sixth at one point during the final round, but a tough front nine of the Tumble Creek Golf Club kept the Gamecocks from holding the top six position needed to advance.

Running away with the regional title was No. 1 Southern California. Finishing in second was the host, No. 19 Washington. No. 16 Northwestern and No. 8 Arkansas ended the Cle Elum Regional in third and fourth place, respectively. No. 29 San Jose State and No. 49 UCF rounded out the top six that advanced from the regional to reach the NCAA Championships.

Carolina once again started on hole No. 10, and the Gamecocks quickly posted birdies. Anita Uwadia connected on three birdies in the first four holes while Lois Kaye Go carded two in the first four holes. Uwadia’s success continued on the tough front nine. In all, the junior finished with seven birdies to end her season by tying her career-low score of 69. Uwadia finished in a tie for 28th overall.

Go was unable to match her torrid pace on the back nine. After registering four birdies during her first seven holes, she could not find the range the rest of the way, ending her season with a 1-over 73 and in a tie for 44th. Go ends her junior campaign with the eighth-best scoring average in program history at 72.82 and the third-best scoring average by a junior in Carolina history.

Freshman Emily Price completed her freshman campaign with her 10th par or better round of the season with an even 72. The rookie put up a 36 on the front and back nine while scattering four birdies along the way to finish in a tie for 22nd. Price ends the season with the seventh-best scoring average in program history and the best freshman scoring average in South Carolina history at 72.81.

Senior Marion Veysseyre completed her final round of competition as a Gamecock with a 1-over 73 with three birdies. Originally from France, Veysseyre participated in 38 tournaments in her career with Carolina and finished 110 rounds of stroke-play in her career. She competed in an NCAA Regional all four of her seasons with Carolina.

Junior Ana Pelaez finished her junior campaign with a 2-over 74, posting a pair of birdies during her round. The Spaniard finished in a tie for 35th and will be one of three rising-seniors that will aim to return the Gamecocks to the NCAA Championships in 2020.
