Gamecocks Open SEC Play on the Road
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 30-ranked South Carolina (4-4) women’s tennis team hits the road for its first SEC matches of the season, facing off against No. 48 Auburn (7-3) on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET and Alabama (11-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
Carolina leads Auburn in the all-time series, 20-7, as well as Alabama at 15-8.
SOUTH CAROLINA
The Gamecocks are coming off of a 1-1 weekend after dropping a close one to No. 13 Oklahoma State, 4-2, and then defeating Coastal Carolina, 6-1.
Individually, No. 125 Emma Shelton is undefeated, holding a perfect 8-0 dual-match singles record. Against the Cowgirls, Shelton earned her first ranked win opposite of No. 56 Ayumi Miyamoto, 6-4, 7-5. Gabriela Martinez also earned the first ranked win of her career after downing No. 123 Lenka Stara, 7-5, 6-4.
In doubles, No. 12-ranked Silvia Chinellato and Shelton are 3-0 for the Gamecocks at the No. 3 position.
AUBURN
The Tigers are currently on a two-match losing streak after dropping a pair to No. 19 Wake Forest, 4-1, and Yale, 4-2.
In doubles, Selin Ovunc and Taylor Russo are the No. 9-ranked duo, holding a 6-2 mark on court one. Ovunc is undefeated at the No. 2 spot, 4-0, and is 6-1 in dual singles. Georgie Axon is on a seven-match winning streak, making her a perfect 7-0 in dual-match singles.
ALABAMA
Alabama won its last two matches, topping South Alabama, 4-0, and SMU, 4-3. The Tide takes on Florida on Friday at 5 p.m. before playing the Gamecocks on Sunday.
Isabella Harvison and Moka Ito are the only ranked players for Alabama, coming in at No. 55 in the doubles poll. Competing at the No. 1 spot, the tandem is 8-1 and 1-0 against nationally ranked opponents. In singles, splitting time between courts two and three, Alba Cortina Pou is 11-0 on the season.
