Cross Country Names 2020 Captains

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s cross country coach Andrew Allden has announced that seniors Heather Stone, Brooke Wilson and junior Hannah Twine will serve as captains of the 2020 squad.

“We are excited to have these three outstanding women lead our team this season. They represent the best of our team both academically and athletically,” Allden said. “They truly have the tools to lead our team this year on and off the course.”

Stone returns as one of the most talented runners for the Gamecocks in recent memory. The Ashburn, Va., native holds the third fastest 5K time in program history that she posted at the Adidas XC Challenge in 2019. She also holds five top 10 times for Carolina on the track, two being indoor times and three being outdoor times, including the 10K outdoors where she finished fourth at the SEC Championships in 2019.

Fellow senior Brooke Wilson will serve as a second-year captain in 2020 for the Cross Country program. As a junior Wilson competed in three meets, including the NCAA Southeast Regional. She posted a new PR of 18:12.9 at the Adidas XC Challenge, a 5K event. She also competed in three indoor track and field meets for the Gamecocks, her best performance coming at the Carolina Challenge where she finished with a PR of 17:31 in the 5K.

Wilson is also a captain off the course, a member of the Honors College, she also has been awarded the Cooper Scholarship. Wilson has been a huge factor in the Gamecocks academically, helping the Gamecocks finish with the 11th-highest GPA in the country in 2019 at 3.74.

Last season as a sophomore Twine made a splash in the Carolina lineup. She competed in four meets and finished third at the Carolina Challenge, helping South Carolina finish as the runner-up. Later in the season she competed in her first collegiate 6K at the Paul Short Run and then competed at the SEC Championships and the NCAA Southeast Regional meet. Twine also competed indoors for Carolina where she posted the ninth best indoor 5000m time in program history at 17:19.83 to take third at the Tiger Paw Invite.

The three are set to lead their team into the first meet of the 2020 season scheduled for Thursday, September 17, when the Gamecocks travel to the Bulldog Invitational at 10:30 a.m.
