Mile Relays Cap Off Bob Pollock Meet in Style
The women would win the 4x400m relay event outright with Davis making her season debut as the lead leg. Davis put Carolina in front early with a split of 53.8 before she handed the baton off to freshman Alysia Johnson who dropped a 53.1 followed by a pair of 53.9 splits from Knowledge Omovoh and Rachel Glenn. The time from the Gamecocks is the fifth-fastest in the nation this season and drops nearly two seconds off the team’s previous season-best time of 3:36.00.
“Our team did a great job adjusting to competing on the road,” South Carolina head coach Curtis Frye said. “I would hate to be going to the conference meet and never have the change to get away from our home environment. It was a ton of fun this weekend, our women are running a bit better every week. Getting Stephanie [Davis] out for her first run of the season was a great step forward for her. We look forward to getting her out for another one next weekend back at home. Next week is going to be a great week to wind up everyone with just two more contests before the conference meet. It’ll be great to get back home and really get ready to roll.”
The men were started off by Spencer Jr., who followed up his 46.78 in the 400m on Friday with a 46.7 split in the 4x400m relay. Richardson then took the baton and put up a 46.7 split on the campus where his father, Eddie Richardson, competed for the track team during his collegiate days. Bailey Rogers and Jackson Junkins dropped splits of 47.2 and 47.3 to help the Gamecocks post their season-best time of 3:08.13 which is also the fifth-fastest in the country this season.
“We had Will start off for us today because you really have to get out and get into the race early,” Frye said. “Right now we have to find ways to replace guys that have gone down. You need someone to run 46-low to put up a great time. We had to make a last-minute substitution because of a small injury. Junkins stepped in and had a big run for us as the anchor leg. Everyone had to buy in and it’s like they say, ‘next man up’. That’s the mentality you have to have to have a great relay.”
Individually, Carolina’s Saturday was highlighted by another second-place finish from Jackson Marseille in the high jump, leaping a final mark of 2.05m, along with KD Young picking up fourth and fifth-place finishes in the women’s weight throw and shot put, respectively. Freshman Dillon McCarthy also picked up a top-five finish in the men’s pole vault, vaulting over 4.75m (15-7).
