Gamecocks Compete Through a Rainy First Day of the Weems Baskin

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina track and field team battled through the elements on the first home outdoor meet at Creggar Track since 2019 on Friday. The Gamecocks registered three wins on the day including one facility record.

“To have the opportunity to have a home track meet, and having one as great as this one, is just the joy,” South Carolina head coach Curtis Frye said. “On top of that I’m also happy to have our coaches back out here after being inside for over a year. It all just came out today with all of the emotions and seeing the thrill of victory in regards to participating.”

After a few delays due to lightning the meet was able to continue uninterrupted starting in the early afternoon. South Carolina wasted no time picking up a win in the women’s 4x800m relay with the squad of Emily Smith, Macie Kavanaugh, Sierra Biber and Isabella Pisani in a time of 9:19.52.

Just a short time later it was the men’s 4x300m relay that broke through for a facility record on the Sheila & Morris Creggar Track. The previous record, that was set in 2018, was held by Norfolk State, with Carolina’s team of Evan Miller, EJ Richardson, William Spencer Jr. and Jackson Junkins clocked a 2:12.18 to smash the previous record by four seconds.

“It was just an awesome run by those guys,” Frye said. “They averaged 32.8 and for [Evan Miller] to go 32.8 is even great for an open was just fun. We’ve had some great teams run [the 4x300m relay] at this facility, and our previous facility, and we love running these fun events at our meets and seeing the joy of all of these teams come out.”

Carolina’s final victory of the day came in the form of Brooke Wilson. The senior captain used an impressive final lap to chase down the leaders and earn her first collegiate victory with a new personal record time of 17:15.23. Wilson’s time edged East Carolina’s Lindsay Yentz by 0.08 to win and nearly put Wilson onto South Carolina’s top 10 outdoor list in the 5000m.

“Another personal best for Brooke, that was great to see,” Frye said. “To win a race as close as she did is tremendous and shows how tough she is on a night that turned out to be just great weather for a 5000m.”

Other notable performers for the Garnet and Black on Friday was Malik Paul in the hammer. The Charleston, S.C., native set yet another lifetime best in the hammer with a toss of 59.09, besting his previous best mark that he set just last week in Auburn. Paul, who finished fourth in the event, will also compete in the discus tomorrow.

South Carolina also had a number of lifetime bests during the opening day of the Weems Baskin. Jalen Herring posted a 6.90m (22-7 3/4) to improve on his previous lifetime best by nearly half of a meter and finished seventh among colligates. Mason Joiner’s 15:42.65 was a new outdoor PR for the junior while Brianna Stamps’ 3.40m (11-1 3/4) helped her improve on her lifetime best mark in the pole vault.

Tomorrow the Weems Baskin continues in Columbia with field events starting at 10 a.m. and running events starting at 11 a.m. For more information on the meet, click here. Please note that during the 2021 track season there are no visiting team or general fans permitted at South Carolina Track and Field outdoor events.
