Glenn Named SEC Freshman of the Week
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina track and field’s final weekend of the outdoor action led to freshman phenom Rachel Glenn earning the SEC Freshman of the Week honor on Tuesday, the conference office announced.
Glenn turned in a high jump mark of 1.91m (6-3 1/4) last Thursday at the UNF Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla., which sits atop the national lists after the Gamecocks’ final regular season meet of the outdoor track and field season. Glenn’s performance is also a lifetime best for the rookie from Long Beach, Calif. The impressive mark is the second-best high jump mark outdoors in school history just behind Jeannelle Scheper’s 1.96m (6-5) set back in 2015 when she won the NCAA Championship. Glenn is one of just five women in the world with a mark of 1.91m or higher, and is only 19 years of age. The mark is also good enough to qualify Glenn for the USA Olympic Team Trials, the mark to qualify was 1.87m.
The honor is the second weekly conference honor for Carolina this season with Glenn joining Aliyah Abrams who earned Co-Runner of the Week laurels earlier this season. Glenn’s Freshman of the Week honor is the first of its kind for the Gamecocks since March 21, 2017, when Darrell Singleton Jr. won the honor with Glenn being the first woman to earn the honor since Jan. 19, 2016, when Abrams earned the distinction.
Carolina will have until May 13 to prepare for the SEC Championships in Bryan-College Station, Texas, at E.B. Cushing Stadium. The Gamecocks’ will compete in the three-day meet from May 13-15 and then will have the NCAA East Regionals later in the month from May 27-29 in Lexington, Ky.
