Gamecocks Wrap Up Play at Wolfpack Invitational Ranked Spotlight

CARY, N.C. – South Carolina closed out the Wolfpack Invitational Ranked Spotlight with three more upsets on the weekend. Both newcomers Sarah Hamner and No. 29 Ayana Akli recorded upsets in their singles matches, and the pair upset a top-50 doubles team.
 
In singles, Akli faced No. 8 Natasha Subhash of Virginia. In the closely contested match, Akli defeated Subhash in a 7-5, 7-5 straight-sets decision. This marked Akli’s first upset and third win over a ranked opponent this fall.
 
Continuing to dominate over ranked opponents, Hamner took on NC State’s No. 48 Abigail Rencheli. Hamner got to work quickly, efficiently defeating Rencheli 6-3, 6-1. The South Carolina freshman finished the weekend with three upsets in singles for five total upsets this fall.
 
In doubles, Akli and Hamner defeated No. 46 Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller of Michigan in a quick 6-2 decision, marking the pair’s first upset.
 
The Gamecocks will return to Columbia, S.C. to practice ahead of the ITA All-American Championships which begin October 4 in Charleston, S.C.
