Hamner Earns Spot in Quarterfinals at ITA All-Americans

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sarah Hamner advanced to the quarterfinals in the singles main draw at the ITA All-American Championships on Thursday. She is the first Gamecock to advance to the quarterfinals in the singles main draw in program history.
 
Hamner, a freshman from Boca Raton, Fla., faced No. 10 Tatiana Makarova of SEC-rival Texas A&M. The newcomer posted a commanding straight sets 6-4, 6-1 upset to advance to the quarterfinals. Makarova was the first top-10 and first SEC opponent Hamner faced this fall, marking her ninth win over a ranked opponent this season. She will face No. 7 Irina Cantos Siemers of Ohio State on Friday.  
 
In the main draw consolation round, No. 29 Ayana Akli competed against Pepperdine’s No. 59 Shiori Fukuda. The Wave came out on top with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Akli, ending her impressive debut in the tournament.
