Gamecocks Take Fourth at Pirate Invitational

Kira Jenkins and Claudia Satzke finished in the top 20 for Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The South Carolina cross country team took fourth as a team, scoring 106 points at the Pirate Invitational on Friday evening at Overton’s Lake Kristi.

“I was encouraged by the performances of Kira Jenkins and Claudia Satzke,” said cross country coach Andrew Allden. “We had some unfortunate breaks during the race, but they stepped up when we faced some adversity. I’m optimistic about our opportunity at the SEC Championships because we will have girls back in our lineup that didn’t score for us today.”

Kira Jenkins was the low stick for the Gamecocks on Friday night. She finished in 14th overall and finished the 6K race in 22:49.8. Claudia Satzke was not far behind her teammate, taking 17th overall and crossing the line in 22:55.5.

The duo has been in the scoring mix for Carolina all year but stepped up as the Gamecocks’ top two runners on Friday.

Carolina had three more in the top 40 to round out the scoring effort. Katerina Hendrix took 32nd in 24:09.3, Isabella Pisani finished in 36th with a time of 24:21.1 and Kathleen Abrams took 39th, crossing the line in 24:25.9.

Hannah Twine, Carolina’s leader in each of the first three meets this season, and Meg Lebo, who was in the top seven for Carolina at the Paul Short Run, did not finish the race.

The SEC Championships are next for the Gamecocks. The conference meet is set for Oct. 29th in Columbia, Missouri.
