Akli Finishes as ITA Carolina Regionals Runner-Up

WINSTON-SALEM, S.C. – South Carolina junior No. 29 Ayana Akli fell in the main A2 singles draw finals on Monday. The Gamecock newcomer fought hard against No. 35 Fiona Crawley of North Carolina but could not fend off the Tar Heel.

In the Monday morning match, Akli faced Crawley for the first time as a Gamecock. Akli last took on Crawley in the first round of the NCAAs during her time at Maryland in which she downed the Tar Heel who was previously undefeated.

The first set featured multiple long points, but Crawley bested Akli 6-4. The second set moved at a quicker pace, but Akli could not hold off her North Carolina opponent. Crawley took the second set 6-4 to claim victory in the main A2 singles flight and Akli finished as the runner-up.

The Gamecocks will be back in action this weekend when they host the Gamecock Shootout.
