Baseball Uses Early Runs, Sanders' Strikeouts to Defeat The Citadel

Will Sanders struck out 10 in five innings and Carolina put up six in the first three frames in the win.

COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team opened a five-game homestand with an 8-3 win over The Citadel Tuesday night (March 23) at Founders Park. Will Sanders struck out a career-high 10 batters and the Gamecocks scored six runs in the first three innings in the victory.
 
Wes Clarke belted his 11th home run of the season in the first, a two-run shot. Colin Burgess brought in Andrew Eyster with a single up the middle in the second and Jeff Heinrich cleared the bases with an opposite-field double in the third.
 
Carolina added single runs in the fourth and fifth with RBI’s from Josiah Sightler and George Callil.
 
Sanders pitched five innings, striking out 10 and allowing just one hit, a solo home run in the fifth, to move to 3-1 on the year. Daniel Lloyd struck out four in two innings of relief while Andrew Peters pitched the final 1.1 innings, striking out a batter.
 
Braylen Wimmer, Burgess and Callil had two hits apiece, while Heinrich drove in three.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Sanders went five innings, also a career long.
  • Carolina struck out 16 batters in tonight’s game. The Gamecocks lead the nation in strikeouts per nine innings.
  • Clarke now has 23 RBI after 19 games.
