Emma Shelton Named SEC Newcomer of the Week
Sophomore Posted a Perfect 4-0 Record Last Week
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Emma Shelton from the South Carolina women’s tennis team was named SEC Newcomer of the Week on Wednesday.
Shelton won all four of her matches between singles and doubles in helping the Gamecocks pull two upsets last week, upending then-No. 19 Vanderbilt and then-No. 21 Kentucky. The Gamecocks (10-9, 7-5 SEC) have won six matches in a row with five of the six coming in upset fashion.
A sophomore from Gainesville, Fla., Shelton clinched South Carolina’s 4-2 win over Kentucky in her last outing by defeating No. 71 Lesedi Jacobs on court three. It marked the second-highest ranked win of Shelton’s career and her best ranked triumph this season. Shelton was first off the court in singles against Vanderbilt with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 performance over Anna Ross. In doubles, Shelton and Silvia Chinellato teamed up to clinch the doubles point against Vandy with a 6-3 upset of the nation’s No. 58-ranked team. They were the first tandem to win against Kentucky in helping the Gamecocks take the doubles point from the Wildcats as well.
Shelton and the No. 24 Gamecocks are set to host No. 13 Florida on Saturday at the Carolina Tennis Center at noon in the regular-season finale for both teams.
