Glenn Named USTFCCCA Regional Field Athlete of the Year

COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina freshman Rachel Glenn has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Southeast Region Female Field Athlete of the Year for the outdoor season. Glenn is the first Gamecock student-athlete to earn a regional nod from the USTFCCCA since Jeannelle Scheper in 2014 (indoors) and is the first outdoor honoree since sprinter Lakya Brookins swept the indoor and outdoor honors in 2011.

Glenn, a true freshman from Long Beach, Calif., has been a factor in the high jump scene since the NCAA Indoor Championships where she finished as the national runner-up. Glenn reached a new lifetime best of 1.91m (6-3 1/4) at the UNF Invitational on April 29, and followed that performance up with an SEC Championship in May. She became the first true freshman to win the high jump crown at the conference meet since 2012 and won with the highest mark, 1.89m (6-2 1/4), since 2015 when Jeannelle Scheper won with a conference meet record of 1.96m (6-5). Glenn’s outdoor season has almost been perfect with her lone loss at the Pepsi Florida Relays where she also ran a personal record in the 400m hurdles during the meet.

The regional nod from the USTFCCCA is the first for Carolina since Delethea Quarles earned the Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2018. Glenn’s honor adds to her impressive collection of awards this season. Glenn earned a pair of All-America honors during the indoor season, grabbing the national runner-up finish in the high jump while also grabbing a First Team All-America distinction in the 4x400m relay. Glenn will also serve as an alternate on Carolina’s 4x400m relay team in Eugene, Ore.

Each of the nine regions honored both genders’ top track athletes and field athletes and the top men’s and women’s head coaches and assistant coaches. Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.

Scheper will look to add more to her resume on next week at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field. Subscribe to South Carolina on Stanza to get schedule updates directly in your calendars.
