Gamecocks Fall to 49ers in Midweek Matchup
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina softball team dropped a tough one Wednesday night (Feb. 16), as the Gamecocks fell to Charlotte 6-1. Carolina now sits at 3-2 on the young season.
Jordan Fabian and Emma Sellers led South Carolina at the plate, each collecting two hits on the night. Maddie Gallagher drew a pair of walks in the game and scored the Gamecocks only run.
“I don’t think we played what Gamecock softball looks like tonight,” head coach Bev Smith said. “It’s early in the season and we have a young team. I think we are still learning some lessons.”
Things looked to be going the way of the Garnet in Black, as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff walk to Gallagher, Fabian singled, and Hannah Kumiyama walked to load them up. One out later, Katie Prebble singled through the right side of the infield to score Gallagher.
The 49ers broke through in the fifth inning, scoring five runs, all of which were unearned, and came with two outs. They would add another unearned run in the seventh.
Karen Ochs took the hard-luck loss for the Gamecocks, throwing 5 1-3 innings, allowing five runs, all unearned, on eight hits while striking out two. Leah Powell came on in relief and pitched 2-3 an inning, allowing one unearned run on two hits. Bailey Betenbaugh threw the final inning and didn’t allow a runner to reach.
The Gamecocks now head to the Bash at the Beach hosted by Coastal Carolina February 18-20. South Carolina will face Marshall and Fordham once each on Friday and Saturday, before taking on the host Chanticleers Sunday.
