Softball Takes Down #24 UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. – The South Carolina softball team took down its first ranked opponent of the season Friday night (March 4), as the Gamecocks defeated 24th ranked UCF 5-2. Carolina now stands at 11-5 on the season.
 
South Carolina was led by Hannah Kumiyama and Maddie Gallagher with two hits apiece. Kumiyama and Jordan Fabian each finished with two RBIs. Fabian also led the way with two runs scored.
 
Karsen Ochs earned her second win of the season, allowing two earned runs in the complete game victory. She scattered six hits while striking out three and walking one.
 
The Gamecocks took the lead in the third inning and didn’t relent. With Fabian on base, Emma Sellers singled to put runners on first and second. Kumiyama stepped in and doubled to center, scoring both runners. The Knights got a run back in the bottom half on a two-out single.
 
Carolina extended its lead in the fourth with three more runs. Aaliyah White led off the inning with a single and stole second. Gallagher singled to right, scoring White. One out later, and with a 3-2 count, Fabian hammered her second home run of the season to straight away center.
 
UCF added a run in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score.
 
The Gamecocks continue the UCF Tournament tomorrow, March 5, when they take on Florida Gulf Coast at 12:30 p.m. followed by a rematch with UCF 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
