Gamecock Collect Five Event Wins to Close Out Tiger Track Classic

Carolina track and field closed out its first outdoor track meet of the 2022 season on Saturday

AUBURN, Ala.— The Gamecocks collected five wins on the second and final day of action at the Tiger Track Classic on Saturday at Hutsell-Rosen Track.

“The sun was shining today and everyone put forth big efforts,” said head coach Curtis Frye. “We had a great openers by Destinee Rocker, Makenzie Dunmore and the women’s 4X400-meter relay. We had some good efforts by the guys in the 4X400-meter relay. The guys in the open 400 meters had good efforts. Jack Mensch and a couple of ladies had PR’s in the 800 meters. The pole vaulters got off to a good start, too.”

The Gamecock women were responsible for four event victories on Saturday.

Makenzie Dunmore won the women’s 200 meters with a time of 23.24. Angel Frank also had a standout race, running a new 200-meter personal best with a time of 23.60.

Alysia Johnson won the women’s 400 meters. The All-American opened her season with a time of 53.63 to win the outdoor debut. Pearl Nagbe took third with a time of 54.99.

Destinee Rocker won the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.12. Rocker’s time was her best in the event as a Gamecock. She also improved upon her No. 8 time in school history in the event.

Frank, Johnson, Nagbe and Dunmore all won the 4X400-meter relay with a time of 3:31.84. The Gamecock 4X400-meter relay squad is entering the season after a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

The men’s 4X400-meter relay claimed the only win on the men’s side. Jackson Junkins, Doval Simmonds, Jack Mensch and EJ Richardson ran a time of 3:12.75 to win the event.

Dillon McCarthy and Carson Lenser both cleared 5.11m/16-9.25 to open the outdoor season. The mark was Lenser’s first outdoor pole vault effort and just four centimeters off McCarthy’s outdoor personal best.

Jackson Marseille cleared 2.10m/6-10.75 and Kobe Franklin cleared 1.95m/6-4.75 in the men’s high jump. They both finished in the top 10 and are both coming off indoor seasons in which they scored at the SEC meet.

Dylan Targgart took third in the men’s shot put. He tossed the shot 17.79m/58-4.50 for a top-three finish in his outdoor opener. He also threw the discus 50.15m/164-6 for sixth place in that event.

The Gamecocks return home for Weems Baskin next Friday and Saturday.

“Next week, we’ll try to get the 4X100-meter relays together,” Frye said. “They’re some of our better events. The 400-meter hurdles is a good event for us. It’s going to be a great team effort next week. Hopefully we don’t have a weather problem.”
