Softball's Rally Comes Up Just Short to 16th Ranked Tigers
COLUMBIA,S.C. – A seventh inning rally came up just short for the South Carolina softball team, as the Gamecocks fell to 16th ranked Clemson 3-1 Tuesday night (Apr. 12).
Pitching dominated the first four innings, as each side was limited to one hit.
All three of Clemson’s runs were unearned in the fifth inning and coming with two outs.
The Gamecocks rallied in the seventh. Riley Blampied led off with a double down the right field line. Katie Prebble followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Two outs later, pinch hitter Zoe Laneaux reached on an infield single, allowing Blampied to score. Kassidy Krupit walked to load the bases. That was where the rally would end, as the final out would be recorded.
Leah Powell took the hard-luck loss, allowing three unearned runs in 4 2-3 innings of work. Bailey Betenbaugh came on for the final 2 1-3 innings, retiring all seven batter she faced, four of which came via the strikeout.
The Gamecocks return to SEC play when they travel to LSU for a series beginning Thursday, April 14.
