No. 3 Gamecocks Start SEC Championship Wednesday

Carolina seeking to advance to match play for the fourth time since 2018 in Hoover

HOOVER, Ala. — No. 3 South Carolina tees it up on Wednesday morning at the 2022 SEC Women’s Golf Championship. The Gamecocks will be paired with No. 9 Alabama and No. 10 Florida in the opening round as the three highest ranked teams via Golfstat in the field this week.

Carolina will go off on the front tomorrow with junior transfer Justine Fournand leading things off on hole one at 10:40 a.m. (ET).

“It’s scoreable out here,” said head coach Kalen Anderson. “The greens are a little firm, so if we get downwind with some front pins those will be difficult to get to. The course looks great and there’s some birdie opportunities out there. Excited to be here and ready to go tomorrow. We’ve just got to play smart and keep doing what we’re doing.”

Fournand will be joined in the lineup by freshman Hannah Darling, freshman Louise Rydqvist, junior Mathilde Claisse and graduate transfer Tai Anudit this week. The five-player lineup this week has won four times this season. Sophomore Paula Kirner will be the team’s substitute. She started at the Wolfpack Match Play (April 4-5), helping the team go 3-0 en route to its program-record fifth win this season.

In Anderson’s 14 previous seasons at South Carolina since 2008, the Gamecocks have finished in the top-five nine times at SECs. This year will mark the fourth conference tournament to be decided with match play. Teams will play 54 holes this week at Greystone Golf and Country Club’s Legacy Course with a cut to the top eight for the match play quarterfinals.

Anderson has had a pair of individual medalist at SECs in All-American Katelyn Dambaugh in 2017 and All-American Pauline Roussin-Bouchard last season when she shot a tournament record and program record 199 (17-under).

South Carolina has advanced to match play every season since moving to the new format earning the top seed in 2018 and the No. 2 seed in 2019 and 2021. The Gamecocks made back-to-back championship match appearances in 2018 and 2019, falling 3-2 both times.

Live scoring is available via Golfstat all week long.
