Softball Drops Series Opener to Rebels

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina softball dropped the opening game of its series against Ole Miss Friday night (Apr. 22), as the Gamecocks fell 8-3. Game two of the series will be tomorrow, April 23, at 3 p.m. Prior to the game, former long time head coach Joyce Compton will have her jersey retired. She will also throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
 
Carlie Henderson led Carolina at the plate, going 2-for-3. Maddie Gallagher reached base three times, with a hit and also drawing two walks.
 
South Carolina had the upper hand as they scored all three of their runs in the first inning. The first three batters of the game reached, as Jordan Fabian walked, and Gallagher and Riley Blampied followed with singles to load the bases. Down 0-2 in the count, Zoe Laneaux hit a double off the wall in left-center, scoring all three runners. 
 
Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, the excitement was short lived as the Rebels plated five runs in the second, including a grand slam, to take the lead. They added a run in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings.
 
Bailey Betenbaugh took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits in 1 2-3 innings.
