Gamecock Track and Field Opens Penn Relays

The Gamecocks opened action at the Penn Relays with six athletes in individual events at Penn Relays on Thursday.

PHILADELPHIA—The Gamecocks opened action at the Penn Relays with six athletes in individual events at Penn Relays on Thursday.
 
Both of the South Carolina women’s hammer throwers tossed personal bests on Thursday.
 
Kayla Racine competed in the Championship division of the women’s hammer throw. Racine threw a personal-best toss of 59.77m/196-1 to take seventh overall in the event. Racine moves to No. 66 in the NCAA and improved on her No. 4 mark in school history. Racine improved her East Regional ranking to No. 35.
 
KD Young also tossed a personal best in the hammer throw, competing in the College division of the event. She finished as the event’s runner-up with a mark of 58.21m/190-11. Young improved upon her No. 5 mark in school history and improved her Regional qualifying position to No. 46 in the East Region.
 
Rachel Glenn finished as the runner-up in her first event of the Penn Relays. She ran the 400-meter hurdles and took second with a time of 57.52. Glenn’s time would put her at No. 16 in the country, but she already has a faster time this season (56.43, No. 9 in NCAA).
 
Kira Jenkins capped off the first day with a performance in the 10,000 meters. She ran a time of 36:44.26 to finish in 19th overall. Her time puts her at No. 9 in school history in the outdoor 10,000 meters.
 
On the men’s side, William Spencer Jr. also finished as the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in a time of 50.90. His time would’ve put him at No. 23 in the country, but he has already run a faster time this season (49.56, No. 7 in the NCAA). 
 
Action at the Penn Relays kicks off at Noon for the Gamecocks on Friday from historic Franklin Field.
