Gamecock Women Capture Second Consecutive Penn Relays 4X200-Meter Relay Title

The Gamecocks defended their women's 4X200-meter relay Championship of America title and saw four qualifiers from prelim action on Friday at historic Franklin Field at the Penn Relays.

PHILADELPHIA—The Gamecocks defended their women’s 4X200-meter relay Championship of America title and saw four qualifiers from prelim action on Friday at historic Franklin Field at the Penn Relays.

“I liked the women winning the 4X200-meter relay,” said head coach Curtis Frye. “You can learn everything from winning. In this test right now, we learned that we can accomplish things and advance. We had our women’s 4X100-meter relay, both 4X400-meter relays and Destinee Rocker all advance to finals tomorrow.”

The Gamecock women won the 4X200-meter relay Championship of America with a time of 1:33.36 to defend their Championship of America title. Jayla Jamison, Makenzie Dunmore, Stephanie Davis and Tierra Frasier defended the Gamecocks’ title from 2019. The Gamecock women’s win marks their sixth 4X200-meter relay title in Penn Relays history, including three of the last four contests.

The Gamecocks’ women’s 4X400-meter relay team finished second in the prelim round of the Championship of America section to advance to the final on Saturday. Angel Frank, Davis, Aaliyah Pyatt and Jahnile Registre ran a time of 3:32.06 to qualify for the final. It’s the Gamecock women’s fourth-fastest from a Carolina squad this season.

Destinee Rocker was the fastest qualifier in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, winning her heat with a time of 13.23 to advance to the final of the 100-meter hurdles on Saturday. Rocker’s time is her fourth-fastest wind-legal time of the season.

The women’s 4X100-meter relay team of Jamison, Dunmore, Frank and Frasier ran a time of 44.47 to qualify for the final of the 4X100-meter relay Championship of America on Saturday. The Gamecocks finished the event third overall in the prelim round.

On the men’s side, the 4X400-meter relay team finished as the third-fastest qualifier in the Championship of America prelims with a time of 3:08.91. EJ Richardson, William Spencer Jr., Jackson Junkins and Doval Simmonds earned the Gamecocks a spot in the final on Saturday. The Gamecocks’ time of 3:08.91 was their second-fastest of the season.

The men’s 4X200-meter relay team finished in third overall in the Championship of America final. Anthony Greenhow, Jr., Spencer Jr., Evan Miller and Junkins ran a time of 1:23.32 for a third-place finish.

In the distance medley relay, the Gamecocks ran a time of 9:49.11 for fifth place. Anass Essayi, Jack Mensch, Hayden Cobbe and Sean Petersen ran the third-fastest outdoor distance medley relay time in South Carolina school history.

Saturday’s action for the Gamecocks is set for a Noon start with three field events (Championship sections of the men’s pole vault, men’s long jump and women’s high jump).

Frye said there is a lot to look forward to on Saturday.

“We’ve got the men’s long jump, both high jumps, the men’s shot put and the men’s pole vault,” Frye said. “We’ve got 4X800-meter relays to look forward to an all of those people who advanced from today.”
